Mt. Kenya

Mt. Kenya is located in the Central Highlands of Kenya north of Nairobi. Mt Kenya stands 5199 m (17,058 ft.) above sea level and is the second highest mountain in Africa.

Mt. Kenya consists of multiple peaks of which most require technical mountaineering skills. However trekkers can climb up the Point Lenana at 4985m (16,355 ft.) which is the third highest peak. The two higher peaks are Batian at 5199m (17,058 ft.) and Nelion at 5188m (17,021 ft.).

There are five commonly used entry routes where most all climbs begin on Mt. Kenya. They are Naro Moru, Chogoria, Sirimon, Burguret and Timau. Each of these routes will take you through the forested and moorland areas at the mountain base. These routes all connect to the Summit Circuit Path which circumnavigates the main peaks of Mt. Kenya. It is possible to circumnavigate Mt. Kenya’s peaks in one day, but you may want to take several days to enjoy the spectacular views. From the Summit Circuit Path you can access trails to any of Mt. Kenya’s peaks including Point Lenana.
